Description
The Chestnut Grove of Carisolo is one of the oldest monumental chestnut groves in Trentino, already described with admiration in 1673 by historian Michelangelo Mariani in his chronicle of the Council of Trent. The centuries-old chestnut trees, with their fantastic and irregular shapes, were planted by local people on common land according to an ancient privilege of Roman origin that gave them full ownership of the tree and the right to harvest its fruit.
For centuries, the grove played a fundamental role in the local economy: chestnuts, easily preserved and highly nutritious, were a staple of the Val Rendena peasant diet, while tannin was extracted from the wood for leather tanning, dye production, and disinfectants. Restored in 2009, the park now features walkways and panoramic rest areas harmoniously integrated into the landscape, allowing visitors to stroll among these living natural monuments.
