The Magdalene, the Penitent Saint in the Trentino Valleys

The Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Tione di Trento is dedicated to Mary Magdalene, the disciple of Jesus who witnessed the resurrection and is a symbol of repentance and conversion. The cult of the Magdalene is deeply rooted in European Christian tradition and finds numerous expressions in the Trentino valleys, testifying to the rich spirituality of these mountain communities.

The sacred building forms part of the vast religious heritage of the Giudicarie, where Tione is the main centre. The area, evangelised in the 4th century by Saint Vigilius, holds churches and chapels enriched over the centuries by the frescoes of the Baschenis and other expressions of Trentino sacred art.
