The Saint of Lovers in Val Rendena

The Chiesetta di San Valentino in Villa Rendena is dedicated to Saint Valentine, the Bishop of Terni martyred in the 3rd century and universally known as the patron of lovers. The cult of Saint Valentine in the Trentino valleys is however also linked to his veneration as protector against epilepsy, a devotion very widespread in Alpine rural communities.

This small church enriches the religious heritage of Villa Rendena and Val Rendena, a land of ancient Christian faith brought in the 4th century by Saint Vigilius. The valley, famous for the Baschenis fresco cycles — including the extraordinary Dance of Death in Pinzolo — offers visitors a unique journey through centuries of art and popular devotion.
